Australian Cattle Dogs for sale

The Australian Cattle Dog was originally bred for droving reluctant cows over long distances. It is hard working, alert and tenacious. Although this dog is declining in popularity as a herding dog it continues to have many of the traits that had been inbred over the years.

The owner of an Australian Cattle Dog needs to be active and willing to give time in stimulating the dog mentally as well as physically to prevent any unwanted behaviour. They are responsive and intelligent and make devoted companions if trained well. This dog is cautious of strangers and has a tendency to nip ankles and ‘herd’ unruly active groups of humanity when so inclined – this is an inbred natural instinct that is becoming less obvious with selective breeding programs.

The Australian Cattle Dog weighs 20-26kg and is 17-20 inches tall. Puppies are born white with a few solid coloured markings, red and black hair appears as the puppy matures. The Australian Cattle dog is sometimes known as the ‘Red Heeler’ or ‘Blue Heeler’, aptly named because of their colouring and tendency to nip heels. Their coat requires very little care just the occasional brushing.

The most common condition that the Australian Cattle Dog experiences is congenital deafness and blindness caused by Progressive Retinal Atrophy. Hip Dysplasia occasionally affects this breed, but generally the Australian Cattle Dog is healthy and resilient.
