The Australian Shepherd Dog, is often termed an Aussie - it is extremely active and intelligent. They need plenty of challenges both mentally and physically to avoid unwanted behavior. The Aussie performs well on the land as it has strong herding instincts. This dog is also well suited as a guide dog and in the police force as it is quick to learn. The Australian Sheep Dog is affectionate and devoted to its owner. Early obedience training is vital and will be quickly rewarded, as the Aussie loves to please.
If the Australian Shepherd becomes bored it is likely to become destructive. Commitment to the care of an Aussie is not for the faint hearted or less active owner as they will require plenty of attention and exercise.
The Australian Shepherd is a medium sized dog of 18-30kg. and it is 18-23 inches tall.
The Aussie has a medium length coat that can be in a range of colours. The coat is of medium length and requires weekly brushing. The Aussie can have blue or brown eyes or one blue and one brown eye, or even a half blue and half brown eye.
The Australian Shepherd is at risk of deafness or blindness, and careful selective breeding should help to eliminate these congenital defects.
The Aussie is also at risk of having Epilepsy. Hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism are also a problem with the Aussie
