The beagle is one of the scent hound group. It was originally used to hunt rabbit, and is still used as a gundog. They are an intelligent and trainable breed with a keen sense of smell. This is regularly put to good use in the detection of illegal substances by the police force and in border protection duties. However it also makes a popular companion, which is undoubtedly because of its loving and gentle nature.
