Belgian Shepherds for sale

The Belgian Shepherd is an intelligent, alert dog that responds well to training and as such is often used effectively by the Military and Police Force. They are affectionate, loyal dogs and make good companions to caring, active families. They are suspicious of strangers and will take time to show their approval, and acceptance.

The Belgian Shepherd will require daily grooming, with the exception of the short haired Malinois. This breed of dog will also require considerable exercise.

The Belgian Shepherd dog resembles the German Shepherd dog in appearance. They are a medium to large size dog weighing 20-30kgs. Their height is 55-65cms. There are four types of Belgian Shepherd Dogs with distinctly different coats – there is the short haired Malinois that has a tawny, red or brown coat, and the long coated Tervueren that has a tawny or dark red coat, also the Groenendael with a long black coat, and finally the rare Laekenois that has a wire tawny, red or brown coat.

Epilepsy is unfortunately a condition that is more prevalent in the Belgian Shepherd Dog than in most other breeds. Cancer, Strokes and failure of vital organs are the main causes of death. The Belgian Shepherd’s life expectancy is 12-14 years.

This dog originates from Belgium where it was primarily used for herding sheep.
