Doberman Dogs for sale

The Doberman has a reputation for being aggressive, which was highly regarded in the early days when they were used as police and guard dogs. They are an intelligent breed that is very protective and loyal to its owner and can be trained to act only on command. Careful breeding programs have resulted in an improvement in the dog’s temperament and they are suitable as companions and for families with older children. They are high energy dogs and can be boisterous, and as such they need a large enclosed yard and plenty of exercise.

They are a muscular medium sized dog, with poise and elegance. The male is larger than the female, ranging in height from 24-28 inches and weighing 28-45kgs. Their coat is short and can be black, brown, fawn and blue and all having rust coloured markings. The dog will only require the occasional rub down with a mit or bath.

The Doberman is genetically predisposed to a number of troubling conditions including a form of haemophilia called Von Willebrands factor. Hip dysplasia and Wobblers syndrome (unstable vertebrae). Permanent loss of hair is common with the blue and fawn haired Doberman. An endocrine disease – hypothyroidism is also sometimes apparent with this breed, causing apathy, weight gain and hair loss.

However Cardiomyopathy is the major cause for death in the Doberman and it is alarmingly common.

The Doberman is likely to live around 10 years

The breed originated from Germany. They used to be called Doberman Pinschers (German for Terrier) but this term was dropped in 1949.
