The Great Dane is a gentle breed of dog, although it is territorial and will guard home and family when it feels the need. The Dane is still used as a guard dog as well as a family pet. It requires considerable exercise, and space to relax. In spite of their size they are suited to inside and enjoy company, they would not like to be left alone all day.

This impressive breed walks tall with dignity and composure. It is approx 75 cms in height and weighs in excess of 100lbs. Acceptable colours are harlequin (black and white), tawny, blue, black and brindle. Their short coat only requires minimal grooming.

The Great Dane would benefit from obedience classes, and is moderately easy to train.

This elegant breed of dog unfortunately can suffer with hip and elbow dysplasia. They are also prone to heart disease. It is particularly important to provide a balanced diet in the puppy stage of life as bone development is crucial for the future health of the adult dog. The Great Dane has a comparatively short life expectancy of 8-10 years.
