Kelpies for sale

There are two types of Kelpie – the working bred dog that will do a magnificent job of rounding up livestock in harsh conditions. They seem to know instinctively what is required and act accordingly and appropriately to get the work done with ease. Then there is the show bred variety, they are bred more for appearances and as family pets. A show bred kelpie would adapt to a more sedentary life style, although they also will still require space and plenty of exercise.

Both lines of breed are intelligent and active and make wonderfully loyal companions. It is important to note that a Working Kelpie would be suited best to farm life -they love to work and enjoy the challenge and stimulation. They respond well to training quickly acquiring new skills.

There are strict guide lines set for the Show Kelpie to comply with – these include a range of acceptable solid colours by show standards, and they are slightly larger than the working Kelpie.

The appearance of the Working Kelpie is not nearly as significant as its ability to perform efficiently in mustering up livestock. It is a medium sized dog between 50-55cms and weighs 14-21kgs.

Kelpies generally have few specific health issues, though can develop some of the many general conditions common to all breed types. Life expectancy is likely to be 12-16 years.
