Miniature Schnauzers for sale
As well as the Miniature Schnauzer there is the Standard and Giant Schnauzers. However this article is focusing on the popular Miniature variety.
They are typically active bold little dogs that are loyal and quick to learn. This dog favours being the only pet, and will instinctively chase any smaller animal. This is not surprising given that it was originally bred for catching rats. Ideally they would suit a home with active owners and older children. They have a reputation for making good companions, are fun loving and energetic.
This miniature dog only weighs 5.5kg -8.5kg, and reaches a height of 12”-14”. The recognized colours for show dogs are salt and pepper, black, and black and silver. They have a wiry coat that sheds so minimally that it is hardly noticed. They require clipping approx every 8 weeks. This little dog sports noticeable eyebrows, whiskers and a moustache.
A unit can provide adequate housing for a Miniature Schnauzer, though it is preferable to have a small yard and a daily walk would be required. Socialisation and obedience classes would be beneficial, as although it is little it can happily assume the role of ‘boss’ if allowed.
In general the Miniature Schnauzer is a healthy breed. There are some inherited problems such as hip dysplasia, renal stones, cataracts, diabetes and a bleeding disorder called von Willebrand Disease. These conditions are becoming less common due to selective breeding programs.
The average life span is 14-16 years.
The Schnauzer originated from Germany in the 19th century. Schnauz is a German word meaning muzzle
