Shar pei puppies for sale
This is a breed suited to the experienced dog handler. The Shar Pei can be defiant and uncooperative without adequate training in early life. However they are intelligent dogs and are very trainable enjoying interaction with their owners, who they show devotion to. This distinguished looking dog is often reserved towards strangers, and can be aggressive with other dogs of the same sex. The temperament of the Shar Peis is noticeably individual and it is always prudent to investigate the family background to check the likely nature of your future puppy. The Shar Pei is an independent dog that will guard and protect what ‘belongs to him,’ this is not surprising as they were originally bred in China as guard dogs for royalty.
A striking looking dog with what appears to be an oversized course coat adorns this little beauty. The many folds of skin in the dogs coat diminish as it matures, but its face remains uniquely wrinkled. Added to this the dog has a blue tongue and curly tail. For show dogs it is a requirement that the coat can be in a wide range of colours but is must be solid. The average weight is 25 kgs.
Regular cleaning of their small triangular ears will be required. Diet will need careful management to avoid any skin allergy – grain free foods are recommended to allay any adverse reaction that the Shar Pei is prone to.
Entropion (which is when the eyelids curl inwards), may require surgery. A condition unique to the Shar Pei is a congenital disease that presents as a fever (FSF) and is accompanied by an accumulation of fluid around the dog’s ankles. The fever is likely to last 24 hours, but is also likely to recur and become more acute. Amoyloidosis can develop as a complication of FSF and this can adversely affect the kidneys or liver function, ultimately causing death.
The life expectancy of the Shar Pei is 10-12 years
