The Shih Tzu is usually devoted to just one member of the family, though in general it is friendly and affectionate. This little pooch makes a wonderful companion to ‘stay at home owners, it would not be happy to be left alone for too long. The Shih Tzu is well suited to apartment living as they do not require much exercise. It is intelligent and will quickly respond to training.
The Shih Tzu is only 4-8kgs and has a height of 20-28cms. It has a very impressive long silky coat that will reach to the ground. To avoid hair going into the dog’s eyes it will need to be tied up. Their exceptionally long hair will need daily grooming and regular bathing. For a Shih Tzu that is not for show the coat can be clipped for ease of care. The coat comes in a range of colours.
They are generally a healthy breed of dog. Luxating patellas and occasionally hip dysplasia can be a problem. Liver and kidney disease are also known to be troublesome, but this is rare. The Shih Tzu does not adapt well to hot conditions.
The Shih Tzu is likely to live for approximately12-14 years.
The Shih Tzu originates from Tibet and the name Shih Tzu translated means Lion Dog in Chinese.
